What travel insurance actually covers

Medical expenses

Medical cover is the core of any policy. It pays for emergency treatment and medical evacuation, extends to emergency dental pain relief and a daily hospitalisation allowance, and — depending on the plan — pre-existing conditions and injuries from adventure sports. Whether the payout carries a sub-limit on individual items is worth checking before you compare price.

Accident & disability

Personal accident cover pays out for serious injury or worse while you’re abroad, with a higher payout if it happens on a flight, train or common carrier, support for lifestyle changes after a serious injury, and on some plans, protection that continues after you’re back in India.

Trip delay, cancellation & curtailment

The largest category covers what can go wrong with the trip itself: trip cancellation and curtailment if plans fall through before or during travel, delay compensation, a missed flight connection, a bounced hotel booking, or a lost passport abroad. Some plans extend to a compassionate visit or stay if a family emergency happens while you’re away, cover for a delayed or early return, and an option to extend the trip itself. If a visa is rejected outright, some plans refund the non-refundable costs.

Baggage & personal effects

Checked baggage is covered if the airline loses it for good or simply delays it long enough that you need to buy essentials while you wait. Separately, loss of personal belongings covers valuables stolen or lost outside of checked baggage — a different claim with different proof requirements.

Other coverages

A few benefits don’t fit the categories above but matter in specific situations: personal liability if you accidentally damage property or injure someone, an emergency cash benefit if you’re stranded without funds, and on some plans, fire and burglary cover for your home in India while you travel.

There’s no single “best” plan

The right one depends on four things that matter far more than the brand: whether you need pre-existing disease cover, whether the plan has sub-limits, how much cover you actually need for where you’re going, and your age. We never name a “best” plan — we take no commission, so we’d have nothing to gain by it.

Common questions

What does travel insurance actually cover?
A single-trip policy typically covers emergency medical treatment and evacuation, trip cancellation or curtailment, delayed and lost baggage, personal accident, and a range of smaller benefits like missed flight connections and emergency cash. Exactly what's included varies by plan — see the full breakdown of all 27 benefits below.
How much does travel insurance cost from India?
Across 1,55,798 single-trip rates the cheapest premium we hold is ₹268. A short trip in your thirties is usually a few hundred rupees; the same trip at seventy can cost several times more, and cover including the USA and Canada costs more than other regions at any age.
Which is the best travel insurance company in India?
We don’t rank insurers or name a "best" one — we take no commission, so we have nothing to gain by pointing you at one. What actually changes the outcome is your age, destination and whether you need pre-existing disease cover, not the brand on the policy.
Is travel insurance mandatory for foreign travel from India?
Not everywhere, but several destinations require it. A Schengen visa needs at least €30,000 of medical cover under EU law (Article 15, Regulation 810/2009). Where it isn’t legally required, it’s still the difference between a manageable bill and an unmanageable one if something goes wrong abroad.
Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
It depends on the insurer, not on you — Bajaj and Tata AIG and ICICI Lombard and IndusInd include pre-existing disease cover on every single-trip rate we hold; others include it on part of their range only. IRDAI's usual pre-existing-disease waiting period does not apply to overseas travel policies, so where it's included, it applies from day one of the trip.
