How to choose travel insurance

There is no single best travel insurance — the right plan depends on your age, where you are going and whether you have a pre-existing condition. Four decisions change the outcome more than the brand does: pre-existing disease cover, sub-limits, sum insured and region. Get those right and the choice narrows to a handful of plans.

We do not rank plans, and we will not tell you which is best. We take no commission from any insurer, so we have nothing to gain by pointing you at one. What follows is the four things that actually decide it, with real numbers from 1,68,230 rates.

1. Pre-existing disease cover

The most commonly missed detail, and the one most likely to matter when something goes wrong. If you have diabetes, blood pressure, a heart condition or anything you take regular medication for, a plan without PED cover may not pay for an episode related to it.

It is not something you choose. Each insurer fixes it per plan. That is why we show it as a column rather than a filter — filtering on it silently hides whole insurers.

Every plan includes it

ICICI Lombard (54%, to age 85) · Care (50%, to age 99) · IndusInd (76%, to age 70)

2. Sub-limits

A sub-limit caps what the insurer pays for one item — room rent, say, or a specific operation — inside your overall sum insured. A plan with sub-limits is cheaper. If the real bill exceeds the cap, you pay the difference.

Neither is right or wrong. With sub-limits saves premium; without removes a surprise at claim time. What matters is knowing which one you bought, and the plan name rarely tells you.

3. How much cover

Driven by destination more than by person. Treatment in the USA and Canada costs multiples of the same treatment elsewhere, which is why those plans are dearer. A Schengen visa sets a legal floor of €30,000 — see the Schengen page for exactly what that means.

Above any legal minimum there is no correct answer, only your own tolerance. The useful question is not “how much is enough” but “what size bill would I struggle to pay myself”.

4. Age, and who will still quote

Premiums climb steeply after about 60, and past 70 the question stops being price and becomes availability. Insurers differ a lot here, and it is the point at which comparison genuinely pays.

Above 85 we stop publishing a price list — cover at those ages is underwritten individually rather than taken from a rate table.

Common questions

Which is the best travel insurance from India?
There is no single best. The same plan can be the obvious choice for a 30-year-old going to Thailand and completely unsuitable for a 70-year-old going to the USA with diabetes. We deliberately do not rank plans — we show you the four things that decide it and let you compare on your own facts. Anyone confidently naming one "best" plan for everyone is usually being paid to.
Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Some plans do, some do not, and it is fixed by the insurer rather than chosen by you. In our comparison Bajaj Allianz and Tata AIG include it on every rate we hold, while others include it on only part of their range. It is the single most commonly missed detail, because most comparison sites do not show it at all.
What is a sub-limit in travel insurance?
A cap on what the insurer pays for a specific item — room rent, a particular operation — inside your overall sum insured. A plan with sub-limits costs less, but if the actual bill is above the cap you pay the difference. Without sub-limits the full sum insured is available for any single treatment.
How much travel insurance cover do I need?
It depends where you are going more than who you are. Medical costs in the USA and Canada are far higher than elsewhere, which is why those plans cost more. For Schengen visas there is a legal floor of €30,000. Beyond any legal minimum, the honest answer is: as much as you would struggle to pay yourself.

Now compare on your own facts

Your age and dates decide which plans quote. The results show PED and sub-limit on every row, so you can see what you are actually buying.
