Common questions
- What is international travel insurance?
- Cover that pays for emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation and evacuation while you are outside India, plus trip disruptions like delays, cancellation and lost baggage. Domestic health policies generally do not pay for treatment abroad, which is why a separate policy is needed for overseas travel.
- How much does international travel insurance cost from India?
- Across 1,55,798 rates the cheapest single-trip premium is ₹268. A two-week trip for someone in their thirties is usually a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees; the same trip at seventy can be ten times that. Destination matters as much as age — plans including the USA and Canada cost noticeably more.
- Is travel insurance mandatory for international travel from India?
- Not universally, but several destinations require it as a visa condition. A Schengen visa needs at least €30,000 of medical cover under EU law. Some other countries require proof of cover on entry. Where it is not required it is still the difference between a manageable bill and an unmanageable one.
- Does international travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
- Some plans do and some do not, and it is fixed by the insurer rather than chosen by you. Bajaj and Tata AIG and ICICI Lombard and IndusInd include it on every single-trip rate we hold. Others include it on part of their range only. Check the PED column before comparing prices.
- What is the maximum age for international travel insurance from India?
- Bajaj quotes to 90+, Tata AIG quotes to 90+, ICICI Lombard quotes to 85, Care quotes to 99, IndusInd quotes to 90. We publish a price list up to 85; above that, cover is underwritten individually rather than taken from a rate table.
Travelling as a student, or over 60?
Both are priced differently from an ordinary trip, and both carry a rule most comparison sites skip over — what a university actually requires, and who decides pre-existing disease cover.
