Schengen visa travel insurance from India
A Schengen visa requires travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all 29 Schengen countries for the whole stay, and covering emergency treatment and repatriation. It is a legal requirement under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, not a recommendation — an application with insufficient cover is refused at the document check.
What the rule actually says
- • Minimum €30,000 of medical cover
- • Valid in all 29 Schengen countries, not just where you land
- • Covering the entire stay, including the days either side
- • Must include emergency treatment and repatriation of remains

The commonest mistake is treating €30,000 as a target rather than a floor. It is the point below which the application is rejected without being assessed. It is not advice on how much cover you need — a serious hospital admission in Europe can exceed it.

Cover levels available
Indian insurers quote Schengen cover in US dollars. These are the sums insured we hold, all of which exceed the €30,000 floor:
Higher cover costs surprisingly little more at younger ages, and a great deal more after about 70. Whether the extra is worth it depends on how you would handle a large bill yourself, which is your call rather than ours.

Common questions
- How much travel insurance do I need for a Schengen visa?
- At least €30,000 of medical cover, valid across all 29 Schengen countries for the entire stay, including emergency treatment and repatriation of remains. This is set by Article 15 of EU Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, the Visa Code. It is a floor, not a target — cover below it fails the document check.
- Is a USD policy accepted for a Schengen visa?
- Indian insurers usually quote in US dollars. The requirement is the value of the cover, not the currency it is written in, so a policy comfortably above the €30,000 equivalent normally satisfies it. The smallest Schengen cover we hold is 50000 USD, which is above €30,000 at any recent exchange rate. Check that your certificate states the sum insured and the Schengen validity clearly, because that is the page the consulate reads.
- How much does Schengen travel insurance cost from India?
- Across 25,344 Schengen rates from 5 Indian insurers, premiums start at ₹296 and the median is ₹7,634. Age and trip length move the price far more than the insurer does — a two-week trip for someone in their thirties is a fraction of the same trip at seventy.
- Does Schengen travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
- Some plans do and some do not, and it is fixed by the insurer rather than chosen by you. The visa rule itself says nothing about pre-existing conditions — it only sets the €30,000 medical floor. If you have a condition that could flare up, check the PED column on each plan before comparing prices.
- Which Schengen countries does the insurance need to cover?
- All 29. A policy limited to your destination country is not enough, because the Schengen area allows free movement once you are inside it. Every Schengen plan we hold is written for the whole area.
