The short answer

Compassionate stay cover pays the extra accommodation and living costs of a travelling companion who has to remain abroad longer than planned because you have been hospitalised.

Compassionate stay cover pays the extra accommodation and living costs of a travelling companion who has to remain abroad longer than planned because you have been hospitalised. It keeps someone with you when the trip has effectively stopped, and it covers the nights their original booking no longer stretches to.

It is the counterpart of compassionate visit: this one applies when a companion is already there.

When it applies

You are admitted to hospital abroad as an inpatient, and a travelling companion has to stay beyond the planned return date because of it.

Most wordings set a minimum hospitalisation period before the benefit begins, and require the treating doctor to certify that you are unfit to travel home as scheduled.

The companion must have been travelling with you on the same trip, and in many wordings must be an immediate family member rather than any travelling companion.

What is covered

Reasonable additional accommodation costs for the extended nights, up to a daily cap and a maximum number of days.

In some wordings, a modest daily allowance for meals and incidental expenses.

The cost of rebooking the companion's return ticket for the later date is covered by some plans and excluded by others — this is worth checking specifically, because it is often the largest single cost involved.

It does not cover the companion's lost earnings, the original unused hotel nights, or an upgrade in accommodation standard.

How it works in practice

Notify the assistance line at the point of admission, not when the original return date arrives. Approval is normally required in advance, and retrospective requests are the ones that get refused.

Keep the hospital's admission certificate and the doctor's statement that you cannot travel as planned. Both are needed.

Keep every hotel invoice for the extended nights, dated and itemised, plus the original booking showing what the trip was meant to cover.

Where the insurer's assistance company can book the extended accommodation directly, let them — it removes the reimbursement step and the argument about what counts as reasonable.

Choosing a plan with this in mind

Look at three numbers rather than one: the daily accommodation cap, the maximum number of days, and whether ticket rebooking is included.

A generous daily cap over two days is worth less than a modest cap over ten, because the situations that trigger this benefit tend to be long ones.

For families and couples travelling together, this benefit and the medical sum insured are the two that genuinely matter; for solo travellers, compassionate visit is the more relevant of the pair.

The three numbers to compare

Plans express this benefit differently, and the headline figure rarely tells you what you will actually receive.

The daily cap, which sets what standard of accommodation is realistically available. A cap set with budget hotels in mind goes nowhere near a room in central London, Zurich or Tokyo — precisely the places where a long hospitalisation is most expensive.

The maximum number of days. Serious admissions run long, and a benefit capped at two or three nights addresses the least difficult part of the problem.

Whether the companion's return ticket rebooking is included. Changing a long-haul ticket at short notice frequently costs more than a week of accommodation, and its inclusion or exclusion often matters more than the daily rate.

Multiply the daily cap by the maximum days, add the likely rebooking cost if excluded, and compare that total against what a fortnight in your destination would genuinely cost. That is the real value of the benefit.

Practical realities during a long admission

Ask the hospital about accommodation for relatives. Many large hospitals, particularly in Europe and Southeast Asia, have on-site or affiliated family accommodation at rates far below local hotels, and insurers reimburse it readily.

Move to a weekly or extended-stay rate once the admission looks long. Insurers reimburse reasonable cost, and a serviced apartment for two weeks is usually both cheaper and more humane than a hotel.

Keep the assistance line informed as the situation develops. Approvals are usually granted in blocks, and an insurer told at day three that the admission may run to day fourteen is far easier to deal with than one asked to approve eleven nights retrospectively.

Keep the companion's own policy in view. Their cover has its own end date, and where the trip extends past it they may need the automatic extension or a paid extension in their own right — being present as a carer does not extend their insurance automatically.
