Help replacing your passport while abroad

The short answer

Loss of passport cover reimburses what it costs to get an emergency travel document or replacement passport when yours is lost or stolen abroad, along with the travel and incidental expenses that replacing it forces on you.

Loss of passport cover reimburses what it costs to get an emergency travel document or replacement passport when yours is lost or stolen abroad, along with the travel and incidental expenses that replacing it forces on you. It is a reimbursement benefit for the process, not a payout for the document itself.

It applies only to a loss that happens outside India during the insured trip. A passport lost at home before you leave is not a travel insurance claim.

What is reimbursed

Fees charged by the Indian Embassy or Consulate for an emergency certificate or a replacement passport.

Reasonable transport costs to and from the mission, which matters more than it sounds when the nearest Indian consulate is in another city.

Incidental costs directly tied to the process: photographs, photocopies, affidavits, and in some wordings the additional accommodation caused by the delay.

Typical limits sit in the region of a few hundred US dollars. Because this is a documented-expense benefit, the payout reflects what you actually spent rather than the limit.

The police report is a hard condition

Report to the local police immediately and obtain a written report or FIR. Virtually every Indian wording makes this mandatory, and many specify a window of 24 hours.

Then report to the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate to begin the emergency document process, and notify the insurer's 24/7 helpline, which can often direct you to the right mission and confirm what it will fund.

A claim without a police report is the most reliably rejected claim in this entire benefit. There is no discretionary route around it.

What is excluded

Negligence — a passport left unattended in a public place, a hotel room, or visible in a vehicle.

Confiscation or detention by customs, police or any authority.

Loss inside India, before departure or after return.

A passport that had already expired.

Delayed reporting beyond the window the wording specifies.

The intrinsic value of the document, which is not an insurable loss — only the replacement expenses are.

Reducing the damage before it happens

Carry a photocopy and a photograph of the passport's data page, stored separately from the passport and also in your email or phone. The mission's process is materially faster when you can produce the number and issue details.

Keep a note of the nearest Indian mission's address and phone number for each place you are visiting.

Use the hotel safe. Most wordings treat a passport carried casually in a day bag as a higher standard of care than one left in a room, but they treat an unattended room as negligence either way.

Replacement typically costs ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 once fees, travel and lost days are counted, which is why a modest benefit limit still covers most real cases.

The emergency document process, step by step

Knowing the sequence in advance saves a day, and the benefit reimburses the costs either way — so the constraint is time rather than money.

Report to the local police and obtain a written report or FIR. Insist on a copy in writing; a verbal report is worthless for both the mission and the insurer.

Contact the nearest Indian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. Missions publish emergency contact numbers that operate outside office hours, and the assistance line on your policy can identify the correct one.

Apply for an Emergency Certificate, which is a one-way travel document permitting return to India, or for a replacement passport where time permits. An Emergency Certificate is typically faster and is the usual route when a flight is imminent.

Expect to provide the police report, photographs, proof of identity and Indian nationality, and details of your travel. This is where a stored photocopy of the data page saves hours.

Where a visa was in the lost passport, you may also need to approach the host country's authorities to regularise your stay before departure — a step travellers frequently overlook until the airport.

What it costs in practice

Mission fees for an Emergency Certificate or replacement passport are modest in themselves. The cost of the episode sits elsewhere.

Travel to the mission, which may be in a different city, and often more than once — applying and collecting.

Additional accommodation for the days the process takes, and in many cases a rebooked flight, since the original one departs while you are still waiting.

Counting fees, travel and the extra nights, a lost passport abroad commonly runs to somewhere between ₹10,000 and ₹30,000 before the rebooked ticket is considered.

That is why the benefit limit, typically a few hundred dollars, covers most genuine cases — and why the rebooked flight, which usually falls under a different benefit or none at all, is the larger exposure.

Before you travel

Photograph the data page and any visa pages, and store them somewhere reachable without the passport: your email, a cloud drive, and a printed copy in separate luggage.

Register the trip details with a family member who can act on your behalf in India if documents are needed from home.

Note the address and emergency number of the Indian mission covering each destination on your itinerary, not just the capital.

Carry the passport only when required, and use the hotel safe otherwise. Most wordings exclude negligence, and an unattended room is the clearest example of it.

Check the passport's remaining validity before booking. Many countries require six months beyond the date of entry, and an expired passport is excluded from this benefit entirely.
