The short answer
Home fire and burglary cover, included in some Indian overseas travel policies, insures the contents of your home in India against fire and burglary while you are away on the insured trip.
Home fire and burglary cover, included in some Indian overseas travel policies, insures the contents of your home in India against fire and burglary while you are away on the insured trip. It is an unusual inclusion — a domestic property cover bundled into a travel policy — and it exists because an empty house is a more attractive target than an occupied one.
It covers your belongings at home, not anything you took with you.
What is covered
Loss of or damage to household contents caused by fire, and in most wordings lightning and explosion.
Burglary involving forcible and violent entry to the premises, which is the standard definition in Indian burglary cover.
Cover runs only for the duration of the insured trip, from departure to return, and only while the home is unoccupied.
It is contents cover, not building cover. Structural damage to the house itself is not included, and remains a matter for a householder or fire policy.
Sums insured are modest relative to the value of a furnished home, and are usually a fixed figure rather than something you choose.
The conditions that decide the claim
The home must be genuinely unoccupied for the period claimed. Where a relative, tenant or staff member was living there, most wordings do not respond.
Burglary requires evidence of forcible entry. A theft by someone with a key — domestic staff, a tenant, a family member — is generally excluded, and this is the most common reason a claim of this kind fails.
An FIR is mandatory and must be filed promptly on discovery.
The premises must have been left reasonably secured. An unlocked door or an open window will usually defeat the claim.
Some wordings require the loss to be notified within a stated period of your return, which is short.
What is excluded
Cash, jewellery, precious stones, and valuables, unless specifically declared and accepted — which, in a bundled travel benefit, they generally are not. For most Indian households this excludes the very items a burglary would target.
Theft without forcible entry, including by anyone lawfully on the premises.
Damage from flood, earthquake or storm in many wordings, since the benefit is written around fire and burglary specifically.
Loss discovered long after return, or after the notification window closed.
Consequential loss of any kind.
Whether it adds anything
For most travellers, honestly, not much — and it is worth saying so plainly.
A householder's policy, where you have one, already covers fire and burglary year-round, at a sum insured chosen to match your contents, and without the unoccupancy and trip-duration conditions. Where both respond, insurers contribute proportionately rather than each paying in full.
The valuables exclusion removes the largest part of the realistic exposure.
It matters most for someone with no home insurance at all who travels leaving the house empty, and even then the modest sum insured limits what it achieves.
Treat it as a minor inclusion rather than a differentiator. If home contents are a real concern, a proper householder's policy costs little and covers the other fifty weeks of the year as well.
Reducing the risk while you are away
Because the cover is narrow and the valuables exclusion removes most of the realistic exposure, prevention does more here than the policy does.
Keep jewellery, documents and cash in a bank locker rather than at home during an extended trip. This is the single most effective step, and it addresses precisely what the benefit excludes.
Avoid signalling absence. Suspended newspaper and milk deliveries, an overflowing letterbox and unlit windows across several evenings are the traditional indicators, and social media posts from the destination are the modern one.
Ask a trusted neighbour or relative to check the property — but note the tension with the policy, which generally requires the home to be unoccupied and excludes theft without forcible entry by anyone holding a key.
Turn off the mains gas and unplug non-essential appliances, which addresses the fire half of the cover directly.
Photograph the contents of each room before a long absence. It costs nothing and it is the evidence any contents claim, under this benefit or a householder's policy, will eventually need.
